Veronica Martell, much-loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, slipped away from us peacefully on 20 February 2023, just shy of her 97th birthday.

Veronica was always cheerful, optimistic, determined, creative, colourful, and caring, but Alzheimer Disease had gradually stolen her from herself, and from everyone who held her dear, over the last 10 years of her life. We will miss her deeply but are grateful that she finally found her rest after a long goodbye.

Born in Coburg, Germany, on 11 March 1927, the 3rd of 4 children, Veronica grew up during WWII, and emigrated to Canada with her husband in 1953, settling first in Winnipeg, then in Calgary in 1965, where she resided until her passing. They raised their two children in Canada.

Veronica was predeceased by her husband Steffan in 1985, and all other family members of their generation in the years following. Remembering her with love and gratitude are her children Cecilia (Karl) and Kurc (Tania), granddaughters Lorelei and Rosalie, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; extended family throughout the world, and countless cherished friends, all of whose lives were enriched by her joyful spirit and generous soul. A service to honour Veronica's life will be held on 6 April 2024, at 2 pm, at The Church of the Good Shepherd (408 38 St SW) in Calgary, with subsequent interment of her cremated remains in the Church's Memorial Garden. A reception will follow.  The family gratefully declines flowers and asks instead that donations be made in her memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada at https://alzheimer.ca/ or the Brenda Strafford Foundation at https://www.thebsf.ca/ .
