Nettie Elise Stowkowy (Stowko) passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the age of 90 years.

Nettie was born to the late Fred and Ahafia Pankiw in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan in 1932. The family moved to Toronto, Ontario some years later and quickly established their life. The family participated in the Ukrainian community for many years. Nettie was an accomplished musician, performing internationally as a mandolinist. She moved to Edmonton in 1958 to work as a paralegal. Shortly thereafter while performing in Calgary, she met Mel Stowkowy. Nettie and Mel married in 1960. They set down roots in Calgary, first in Brentwood with their daughters Lori and Carrie, then in North Haven, and then Harvest Hills.

Nettie and Mel were active members of the AUUC where Nettie was involved with the Ukrainian orchestra playing mandolin and mandola. She then started teaching mandolin and conducting the orchestra and choir. Nettie was also an avid curler at the Calgary Club where she played regularly.  After retiring as the Cultural Director at the Ukrainian Cultural Center, Nettie and Mel spent their time traveling. They became snowbirds and spent their winters in California. They also spent many summers with their family in Windermere, BC.

Nettie is survived by daughters, Lori Faulk (Glenn Miller) and Carrie Viseur (Brian Scott Viseur); and Lori's daughters Sacha Brandt (Russell Brandt) and Chelsea Hammer (Simon Hammer). She is also survived by her great-grandsons, Max and Sebastian. Nettie was predeceased by Mel in 2000.
