Janet Stones passed away on March 5, 2021 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 90. Mom had a  wry sense of humour and was always marching to her own beat right to the end of her life.

Mom was born July 15, 1930 in Port Arthur, Ontario, the youngest of four girls, to parents John and Agnes Hendry.  She attended St. James Public School, Port Arthur Collegiate and graduated from the Port Arthur General Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.  Mom followed the career path of her much loved Aunt Betty and sisters Thelma and Agnes (Gussie) in becoming a Registered Nurse.

In 1953, Mom married our Dad, Fred (Bud) Stones and together they had three children,

John, Lynda and Reg. The family left Port Arthur in 1966 and lived in numerous mining towns in northern Ontario, Quebec and Labrador.  In later years, Dad's job led them to California, Florida, Colorado and Michigan. They finally settled down in the West Island of Montreal in the late 1970's.  Even though it could be difficult moving so many times, Mom always made the best of wherever she traveled and lived.

Mom started her nursing career at Port Arthur General Hospital. She retired at the age of 65 after working in geriatrics at Lachine General Hospital in Montreal. She was known to tuck in and give her elderly patients a kiss on the forehead at bedtime while working nights. She administered this same kind and compassionate care throughout her nursing career.

Mom loved to keep busy. She had many hobbies and interests including gardening, ceramics, cooking, baking, reading, making wine and spirits, knitting and other handicrafts. She was computer savvy and loved to play online video games with her grandsons. Mom also inherited a love of fishing and hunting from her mother. Nana and Mom would go on many outings together, bringing home partridge and fresh fish.  Wherever Mom went in life, fishing spots were always found.

Fridays in Montreal were special when she and Dad would meet friends at the local pub.  After Dad died, Mom would go out with her girlfriends Val and Phyllis to visit with friends, have a glass of beer and have a go at the slot machines.  One of Mom's great pleasures was her pet dogs.  She shared this love of dogs with her granddaughter and had many faithful furry friends throughout her life.

In 2018, Mom sold her house in Montreal and moved to Calgary to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Mom is lovingly remembered by her children, John (Marlene), Lynda (Glen) and Reg (Chad), her grandchildren Hilary, Andrew and Kevin, great grandson James, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and her loving sisters-in law Ruth Jackson and Vivian Stones.  Mom will be fondly remembered by friends and neighbours in Montreal where she lived for 40 years.   She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Fred (Bud) and her three sisters, Catherine, Thelma and Gussie.  It is interesting to note that Mom was the last of the Hendry Clan that originated in Scotland.

Our family would like to thank the kind and caring team at Mckenzie Towne Retirement Residence for the love and care she received for the last two and a half years and especially in her final days where she remained comfortable and peaceful.

As per Mom's wishes, there will be no service and her ashes are to be scattered into a good fishing spot. The family will have a private celebration of her life at a later time.  Wishing you tight lines Mom.  You will always be remembered in our hearts.
